Happy new year! And a birthday cake.

Happy new year, folks! I have finally come back to life to write my first post of 2016. My eldest nephew's birthday falls in the first week of January so he's usually my first bake of the year. This year it was a minecraft themed cake.

He requested a 3D cake which worried us originally (mum's my birthday cake side-kick) but it ended up being ok to construct out of two plain sponge traybakes and a lot of fondant icing. We set one cake block on its end to create a vertical arm and made a little cardboard wedge from a cereal packet to lift up Steve's leg.

We managed to finish the cake by 1am, which isn't bad by our standards (we only started after 9pm) but the kitchen looked like it had been hit by an icing sugar bomb. There appears to be no clean way to work with fondant icing.

The birthday boy was delighted with the cake and I was happy that it tasted good. After rich food at Christmas and new year it's lovely to return to a plain sponge with jam and icing.

Cake and jazzy dress backdrop.

I haven't baked anything else so far as we're still eating our way through christmas/new year treats (mince pie, anyone?) but I have finished a small knitting project, started a bigger knitting project and I'm over half way through sewing my long awaited dungaree shorts.

What's everyone else up to at the moment? Any new projects or exciting bakes on the horizon?
